Public Health Research and Health Disparities

Hala Madanat's foundational work centers on health promotion, behavioral science, and addressing disparities in cancer equity, obesity, and child health, often through community-based interventions.[2][3][15] She has led multilevel clinic- and community-based trials to increase healthy behaviors, including parent acculturation's role in child BMI and menu labeling to promote healthier choices.[2][3][17] Her research extends to antioxidants, social determinants of health, and pandemic response, such as COVID-19 school reopening protocols.[5][6][23]

As VP of Research and Innovation, Madanat drives SDSU's research ascent to top 5% nationally, with high doctoral conferrals and R1 designation, honored by San Diego's proclamation.[13][24][26] She oversees innovation programs, startup incubation, and workforce development, including a $1.24M grant for social work students.[19][20] Appointed to the CIRM Board by Governor Newsom, she advances stem cell and regenerative medicine.[24]
