The CogniSAT-6 spacecraft, launched in March 2024, will test Dynamic Targeting (DT) in early 2025. DT involves rapid onboard analysis of lookahead sensor data to optimize subsequent imaging, enabling applications like cloud avoidance and storm hunting. This approach leverages edge computing for real-time decision-making in low Earth orbit.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in collaboration with Ubotica Technologies, is actively developing and demonstrating onboard data analysis capabilities for Earth science applications. Utilizing the CogniSAT-6/HAMMER (CS-6) satellite, which features a hyperspectral instrument and neural network acceleration hardware, this initiative aims to perform edge-based data analysis. This approach is expected to enable novel Earth science measurements and responses by leveraging deep learning and spectral analysis algorithms directly on the satellite.
